The gentlemen’s pew dates from the 17th century and has got the Sickinghe family arms on it. The Sickinghe family lived in the old mansion of Breede. The organ was built by Van Swinderen and was later adjusted by Van Oeckele

Warffum
The Dutch Reformed Church is a vigorous mediaval church that has changed a lot in the course of time. Originally it was a church made of tuff with a receded hemispheric apsis. During the second half of the 16th century the church was heightened and lengthened with brick. In the 19th century the church and the choir were plastered and decorated in neo-Gothic style. Under the floor of the choir is the vault of the residents of the mansion of Warffum. Under the tower stairs is a space where drunkards and vagabonds could be locked up. Two enormous bells are in the tower and you can hear them many times a day. In 1812 Freitag built an organ in the church, which is known as one of the most beautiful organs in the north of the Netherlands.

The church of Usquert
As early as in de 9th century there was a little church in Usquert. Probably it was the first church of the province of Groningen. In the 11th century this chapel was replaced by a church made of tuff. This building and the entire interior went up in flames in 1231 after a fight that got out of hand with the inhabitants of Eenrum. This sacrilege reached the pope and Eenrum was excommunicated. As a penance the inhabitants of Eenrum provided money for the construction of the present church.

The Antoniuskerk of Kantens (St Antony)
The St Antoniuskerk dates from the 12th century. The octagonal tower is striking. The lower part must have been built at the same time as the western and oldest part of the church. The upper part of the tower dates from about 1500. The heavy buttress with an entrance at the west side was added later to prevent the tower from sagging any further. The church has got a great carved pulpit from 1741 and a 17th century choir. The organ dates from 1667 but was enlarged later.

The St. Jacobus de Meerdere Kerk (the Roman Catholic church) of Uithuizen
This church was built in 1860 in neo-gothic style by J.A. Scheepers. Three years later the vicarage was built in that same style next to the church. In 1870 the parish founded a churchyard south of the church and the vicarage. The spacious gardens with ponds, footpaths and groves among the church, vicarage and the churchyard are very nice. At this church the pilgrim’s route to Santiago de Compostela starts: the way of St James.

The Jacobikerk of Uithuizen
The Jacobikerk in Uithuizen was built during the first half of the 13th century, but the tower (at least the lowest part) dates from the 12th century. The choir dates from halfway the 15th century. The church was devoted to James the Greater. In the interior you can find Allert Meijer’s works, besides Jan de Rijk’s woodcarving. The organ was built in about 1700 by Arp Schnitger.

The church of Zandeweer was built in the 13th century by monks of the monastery of Aduard or Wittewierum. The big bell was cast in 1367 and the small one in 1464. The big one is called Maria and the other one Catharina. The organ, a gift from a local squire, was finished in 1731 by Albertus Anthonie Hinsz. It is one of his first works.

The Mariakerk in Uithuizermeeden (St MaryThe Mariakerk was built in the middle of the 13th century. You can find the workmanship of Allert Meijer and Jan de Rijk. Allert Meijer designed the 48,5 m high tower. The resemblance to the Der Aa-church in Groningen is not accidental: Meijer designed that tower too, as city architect of Groningen.

The Nicolaaskerk of Oldenzijl (St Nicolas)
The church of Oldenzijl is situated on a small mound and partly encircled by a moat. The church dates from the first half of the 13th century, the transition period of romanesque and roman-gothic style. It was devoted to St Nicolas, patron saint of the mariners.
